Farm insurance Ontario

One policy designed around the home, land and business working together.

Risk Care helps Ontario farm owners and agricultural businesses, including vacant farms, rented farms and farms with commercial or business exposures, arrange appropriate insurance quotations. Coverage may include dwellings, barns, machinery, livestock, stored produce, farm liability, pollution exposures and business interruption.

Owner-occupied, vacant, rented & commercial farm risks

Protection matched to how the farm operates

Vacant farms

We can seek quotations for farms where the dwelling, buildings or entire premises are vacant. Tell us why the property is vacant, how long it has been vacant, inspection frequency, utilities, heating, security and future plans.

Rented farms

We can quote farm properties rented to residential tenants or farm operators. Provide the lease arrangement, who occupies and farms the land, which party owns machinery or livestock, and who is responsible for maintenance and liability.

Commercial & business exposure

We can approach markets for farms with eligible business activities such as farm-gate sales, custom farming, storage, workshops, contractors or home-based businesses. Each activity, receipts, payroll and liability exposure must be disclosed.

Farm coverage

Protection built around agricultural operations

01

Farm dwelling and contents

Protection for the principal farmhouse, personal property, detached structures and additional living expense, subject to the selected form.

02

Barns and farm buildings

Scheduled barns, shops, silos, grain bins, greenhouses and other structures, with values and settlement terms selected for each building.

03

Machinery and equipment

Tractors, combines, implements, irrigation equipment, tools and leased or financed machinery can be scheduled or insured on an eligible blanket basis.

04

Livestock and produce

Coverage may be arranged for livestock, poultry, harvested produce, seed, feed and seasonal concentrations, depending on operation and insurer.

05

Farm liability

May respond to covered bodily injury or property damage involving premises, animals, products, custom work, roadside sales or public activities.

06

Income, breakdown and pollution

Options may include business interruption, equipment breakdown, limited pollution, chemical drift and other farm-specific extensions.

Every farm is different. Dairy, poultry, hog, equine, greenhouse, agritourism, custom farming and large tank exposures may require a separate insurer supplement and inspection.

Farm insurance FAQs

Why is a standard home policy usually not enough for a working farm?

A working farm combines a residence with commercial buildings, machinery, livestock, produce, employees and farm liability exposures that a standard home policy may not address.

Why are machinery and building schedules important?

The insurer needs each item’s use, age, construction or model, value and settlement basis. Long lists are easier to verify through uploaded schedules than repeated web fields.

Will the farm need an inspection?

Many insurers require photographs or an inspection to assess building condition, electrical and heating risks, separation distances, housekeeping, fire protection and environmental exposures.
